History
Conrad Jobst founded JOBST® in 1950 in Toledo, Ohio. Born in Germany, Conrad was both a mechanical engineer and inventor. He applied his varied expertise and personal experience to the development of gradient compression garments, which relieve the symptoms of venous insufficiency. About the same time VARITEX – the predecessor of JOBST in Europe – became established in Germany and began cooperation with professionals in phlebology and lymphology.
After Conrad’s death in 1957, his wife, Caroline Jobst, successfully grew the business. Under her leadership, JOBST expanded the product lines to include Ready-to-Wear vascular garments; consumer support stockings, plastic and reconstructive surgery garments, and anti-embolism stockings.
Beiersdorf AG, Hamburg Germany, acquired JOBST® in August 1990. Beiersdorf AG also acquired VARITEX in Germany. VARITEX was renamed JOBST in 1996. On April 2, 2001, the business was renamed BSN-JOBST®as it became an affiliate company of BSN medical Inc., a joint venture holding company equally owned by Smith & Nephew and Beiersdorf.
Wearing compression for the first time
Compression is believed to increase the pressure in the tissues beneath the skin thus reducing excess leakage of fluid from the capillaries and increasing absorption of tissue fluid by the capillaries and lymphatic vessels. Gradient compression helps reduce and prevent swelling, relieves that tired achy feeling in your legs, and more.
The first few times you wear your compression garment you will notice the squeeze. It is OK to begin wearing your stockings gradually. Try wearing them for just a few hours the first day and then increase the number of hours each day until you can wear them comfortably throughout the day while you are up and about. Check your stockings periodically to smooth out any wrinkles as the fabric may move during the day. Remove your stockings before going to bed.
You can benefit from JOBST® medical compression hosiery whether you suffer from tired aching legs because you spend too much time standing or sitting, or suffer from more serious problems like swelling and venous disease. We fit all genders, shapes and sizes from tall to petite, large frame to small. JOBST® offer a wide range of colors and styles to meet your needs. If comfort, health and style are important to you, then you can count rely on JOBST®.
